Artist Painting Artist

”PAINTING” by Kim VanDerHoek.

2.5 x 3.5 inch ACEO/ATC original oil painting on canvas paper mounted on acid free cardstock.
$8 (shipping within the U.S. $3)

This ACEO was done using a palette knife (a large metal knife used for mixing paint) instead of a brush. I’ve always admired painters who have mastered this technique so I thought I would give it a try. A fellow painter was kind enough to hold still for a bit while I created this.

ACEO stands for Art Card Editions and Originals. They are cards of artwork measuring 2.5 x 3.5 inches, the same as a standard playing card. These cards are very collectable since they don’t take up much space.

Natural Wonder

”KEYHOLE ROCK” by Kim VanDerHoek.

S O L D

Laguna Beach has many beautiful places to paint. This is a very memorable spot called Keyhole Rock by the Montage resort.

I painted this using a different palette of colors. It was finished in two sessions, one on location and one in the studio. It helps to sketch a scene like this at first to warm up and to get the placement of the essential elements nailed down. The sketch is also a good reference for any studio work that needs to be done.

Inland Waters

”MORNING BY THE BAY” by Kim VanDerHoek.

8X10 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
$65 (Shipping $11 within the U.S., $20 for Canada or $28 for everywhere else)

Newport Beach has a wonderful spot inland called the Back Bay where the ocean water washes into a small bay. Part of it is a nature preserve with many walking paths winding through it. I’ve spent a lot of time walking the paths there and I have to say it is incredibly beautiful in spring when the wildflowers are in bloom.

This was painted on a misty spring morning. It was so quiet and peaceful at this spot that it was easy to forget I was blocks away from the city.

Scenic Irvine

”JEFFREY BEFORE PHASE 1” by Kim VanDerHoek.

9X12 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
Submitted for competition.

This is my husband’s new favorite painting of mine. When I brought it home he immediately said I should frame it and enter it into any upcoming competitions I could find.

The scene is overlooking Irvine. The street is called Jeffrey and the fields used to be planted with flowers that were then taken to market. Today that field is empty and a construction fence surrounds it. It will be interesting to see what takes its place. I’m hoping for something beautiful that will inspire another painting. What I love in this scene were the telephone poles jutting this way and that, they have such personality!

I hope you enjoy it!

”BLUFF WITH PALMS” by Kim VanDerHoek.

9X12 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
$85 (Shipping $11 within the U.S. or $20 for Canada)

Saturday I went to another art show featuring work done on the peninsula in Newport Beach. It was a paint-out competition put together by the Southern California Plein Air Painters Association.

What happens during a paint out is participating artists can get the backs of their canvases stamped at the start of the event. Then they paint on them in a certain area over the course of a week. In this case it was the Newport peninsula. At the end of the week the work is judged, awards are given out and an art show is put on featuring the work from the paint out.

I saw some amazing artwork created by some amazing local artists!

The painting I’ve posted tonight reminded me of a wonderful day a year ago when I was painting at the beach.

A Must See Show!

This painting is by Tom Brown.

People often ask me how long I’ve been painting. The truth is, not that long. For the last year and a half I’ve been taking classes from an amazing artist named Tom Brown.

When I first saw Tom’s work listed for sale on Ebay I was in awe. Soon after, I purchased one of his paintings and I asked him about his workshops. I’ve been painting with him ever since. His classes are perfect for beginners as well as more advance students. He has simplified the process to make painting a landscape less intimidating. His feedback has always improved my paintings, even when the only thing he tells me I should do is to stop.

Tonight I went to the opening of his gallery show titled “Unexpected Vistas of Irvine” at the Irvine Fine Arts Center. The show was spectacular! Included in the show were cityscapes as well as landscapes, many of which were on a large scale. He said his intent was to demonstrate that the views with man’s touch on them could be just as beautiful as the pristine landscapes. Mission accomplished!

If you are in the area, I highly recommend you stop by to see his work! Admission and parking are free. Irvine Fine Arts Center, 14321 Yale Avenue, Irvine California 92604.

Flattery Will Get You Everywhere!

”UP THE PATH” by Kim VanDerHoek.

5X7 inch Oil Painting on canvas board includes gold leaf frame.
$100 (Shipping $25 within the U.S. or $50 for Canada)

Last night this little painting won a first place ribbon for best oil painting at the Orange Art Associations monthly meeting!

The Art Association meets 9 times a year. During each meeting there is a guest speaker, usually an artist, who either gives a lecture or demonstrates how they work. This month Terry Stanley showed all of us how she creates her amazing portraits in watercolor.

Also at each meeting members are allowed to enter 2 pieces of artwork into a group competition. Each creation is put into a category such as oil, watercolor, photography, etc. and judged. The guest speaker for the month has the honor of judging.

I’m not always able to make to every meeting, but when I do go I get so much information from the other artists there! It is such a wonderful organization to be a member of. If you are in Orange County and would like to see for yourself log onto http://www.orangeartassociation.com/index.html

ACEO Play

”TWINS” by Kim VanDerHoek

2.5 x 3.5 inch ACEO/ATC original oil painting on canvas paper mounted on acid free cardstock.
S O L D

It's easy to get lost in the work of painting. Doing what you know will work, sticking with the same methods and colors. These ACEOs let me play around with new things without feeling a great deal of loss in time and materials. Mostly, they give me permission to totally fail. Often, it's the ones that turn out badly that I learn the most from.

Many of them have been successful though and taken my work in a direction I wouldn't normally try. This is one I thought was successful. I hope you enjoy it!

ACEO stands for Art Card Editions and Originals. They are cards of artwork measuring 2.5 x 3.5 inches, the same as a standard playing card. These cards are very collectable since they don’t take up much space.

Fine Artist

9X12 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
$85 (Shipping $11 within the U.S. or $20 for Canada)

It seems really weird to me to be able to call myself an artist. In college painting was something I always wanted to do but knew my parents would never let me major in such risky profession. Oh how I envied the students that studied ceramics, glass blowing and painting full-time! For me painting class was just an elective that I needed the credits from in order to graduate. I would leave painting class telling myself over and over that it wasn’t really THAT much fun…I could live a very happy life if I never picked up a paintbrush again. HA!

Near the end of college a writing teacher asked all of us to close our eyes and visualize what exactly we wanted to be doing in five years time. What popped into my head is surprisingly similar to my life today. In the image I was sitting painting at an easel and my husband walked in the door and kissed me hello.

Funny that for so many years I worked as a graphic designer and managed to talk myself out of working in the fine arts field and yet here I am, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Cityscape

”CITY BRIDGE” by Kim VanDerHoek.

8X10 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
S O L D

This bridge is in the heart of the city but you’d never know it by looking at the scene. Right next to the river is a bike path that runs for miles through the city. While painting with a group of fellow artists, a cyclist crashed head first into one of our friend’s easels (she was painting well off of the bike path too)! The cyclist suffered several bumps and bruises. The painter was unhurt although, her easel was broken and her painting was damaged. And can you believe that the cyclist had the nerve to be angry with my friend?

Irvine, California has a wonderful mix of farmland right next to freeways and commercial centers. As a painter, there is an endless feast of inspiration to draw from.

A Personal Favorite

”SPRING IN PETER’S CANYON” by Kim VanDerHoek.

9X12 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
Not For Sale

This is one of my favorite paintings. Everything went right the day I captured this on canvas. Peter’s Canyon is such a wonderful place to paint! Everywhere you turn there is a painting waiting to happen. This is another location that is right on the edge of the city. I am amazed at how many open spaces still remain in Orange County, although, that is rapidly changing.

This painting was juried into the Orange County Fair, the Orange Open Annual Art Show (where I thought it had been sold but that ended up being a typo) and received an Honorable Mention in the Anaheim Art Association’s Annual Art Show. My husband and I are very fond of it so, until I paint something even better we will be hanging onto it.

Ahhh Laguna

”SWAYING PALMS” by Kim VanDerHoek.

5X7 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
$55 (shipping within the U.S. $11 - Canada $20)

Today it’s over 100 degrees and I really wish I lived in Laguna Beach! But then, any day is a good day to live in Laguna Beach regardless of the temperature. This painting is a view from Heisler Park looking north. I love painting palm trees, they look so complex but when you break them down into shapes they almost paint themselves.

Honestly, I can feel the tropical breeze coming off the water! Hear the waves crashing?

This was one of those paintings that just sort of fell out of me. Near completion I stood back and thought wow, did I just do that? I hope you enjoy it!
