Woodbridge Lake

”WOODBRIDGE LAKE” by Kim VanDerHoek.

8 X 10 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.

Woodbridge Lake is in the center of a planned community in Irvine. It’s a very bucolic setting considering is moments away from the bustling center of the city. In the background is Saddleback mountain.

Footpath with a View

”FOOTPATH WITH A VIEW” by Kim VanDerHoek.

9 X 12 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
S O L D

I bought a new brand of oil paints recently and this painting is the first one I completed using them. It takes some getting used to, especially since all the colors are not the same. Mixing takes more thought and time. Overall, I am pleased with them.

”EUCALYPTUS AT DUSK” by Kim VanDerHoek.

5 X 7 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
$55 (Shipping $12 within the U.S., $20 for Canada or $28 for everywhere else)

My computer has been in the shop all week so I haven’t been posting anything new or visiting anyone else’s blogs. I’m feeling out of touch with the world so it’s good to be back online!

This was a quick little tree and mountain painting. I hope you like it.

Morning Shore

”MORNING SHORE” by Kim VanDerHoek.

9 X 12 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
$85 (Shipping $12 within the U.S., $20 for Canada or $28 for everywhere else)

This turned out to be a funny spot to paint. I had situated myself next to a cliff for wind protection. Above me on the cliff are amazing beach houses. However, I failed to notice the pipes hanging over the edge of the cliff above me. In the middle of this painting the sound of pouring water splashing down next to me made me jump. Luckily, I had set up my gear far enough away to avoid getting wet. Throughout the day water would splash down next to me and then stop abruptly.

Otherwise, it was an amazing morning to paint in Laguna Beach!

Once Upon A Time

”ONCE UPON A TIME” by Kim VanDerHoek.

16 X 12 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
$110 (Shipping $25 within the U.S., $35 for everywhere else)

I completed this painting at a Saturday morning workshop with Tom Brown. This was an exercise in putting together several elements from the surrounding landscape into the painting. For example, the house was in one spot and the trees were behind me. It was a good lesson on how to control the composition and soften color to create a mood.

My goal was to create a composition that would focus your attention on the house. Tom set the task of using color that would give the painting the feel of an illustration. It was challenging! Usually when I am lost as far as color or composition, I look to the landscape for the answers, this time I had to figure them out for myself and really think the whole process through. A great exercise to be sure!

Art That's Small at City Hall 2008

While running around trying to find frames in time for the Art That's Small at City Hall show in Laguna Beach. I had to face reality, I am a mother of a very active 3 year-old and can't spend hours trying to frame awkward sized artwork. That said, I decided to make my busy life easier and frame the painting you see above. It is a standard size and I happened to have a very nice frame at home for it. Ta da!

You can see "Swaying Palms" in person at City Hall in Laguna Beach, CA, 505 Forest Ave. next to the fire station in town. The show runs March 31 - May 1, 2008. City Hall is open Mon. - Fri. 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. All of the artwork on display is 12 inches or smaller. It includes oil paintings, watercolor, acrylic, photography and mixed media.
