Eucalyptus Avenue

9 X 12 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.

My goal in this painting was to guide your eye into the painting starting on the pathway and ending at the light green trees in the background. This one I started outdoors, brought close to completion and finished at home. I think was beneficial to stop when I did, take another look at it later in the day and finish it that night. It allowed me to correct some colors and add details which really improved it overall.

Treasury Riddle

Check out the Etsy treasury I've been included in! The creator, Alkdesigns, came up with the idea of making a visual riddle of the treasury. See if you can figure it out. If you're an Etsy member be sure to show it some love and leave a comment.

Santiago Brush

8 X 10 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.

The tree on the left is the same tree you saw in my 10/12 post it’s just painted from a different angle.

Today, I wanted to play with values. Specifically, making the background recede and the foreground pop. I tend to want to emphasize everything and use over the top colors all the time. I’m easily overwhelmed by all the color I see in the landscape and have to carefully consider (and often reconsider) my choices. All the while I continually to ask myself what is each color doing, how is it supporting the painting as a whole?

Two With Sails

8 X 10 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.

It was a hazy morning when I painted this one at Newport Harbor in Newport Beach. It looks like a peaceful scene doesn’t it? Well, harbors are busy places, especially early in the morning. There were loud boats motoring past, a huge fuel tanker unloading diesel fuel with it’s driver having a very loud conversation on his cell phone nearby and I was witness to a very heated exchange between 3 men that had something to do with a boat, fuel and the fact that one of the guys left his wallet in the car. I wish I was a faster painter, so that I could have captured it all on canvas!

Pumpkin With Stem

5 X 5 inch oil painting on panel.
S O L D

I had such a blast with my last pumpkin painting I did another. It was just as much, if not more, fun to paint than the last one! You might see a few more of these in the weeks to come. At least until we carve that baby into a spooky Jack o’ Lantern. (That should be fun since my son freaks out every time he touches something slimy.)

This time I asked my husband to build a still life box similar to the one Carol Marine uses so that I could have more control over my lighting. It’s made with PVC pipe and took him less than 20 minutes to make. Pretty cool, huh?

Pumpkin

5 X 5 inch oil painting on panel.
S O L D

Last week I finished a painting that was extremely difficult for me to complete (I’ll post it here in a few weeks). It was a street scene on an overcast day. Finishing it took the joy for painting out of me for a while and I wasn’t very happy with the way it turned out.

While trying to recharge my creative batteries I was looking at Carol Marine’s blog. Her still life paintings always inspire. I had just bought a pumpkin for Halloween and it seemed like a fitting subject. An hour and a half later I was done and I had so much fun painting it! I was able to use colors I normally don’t when painting outdoors, I was very comfortable inside, I didn’t have to drive anywhere and I finished it really quickly. Talk about satisfying!

What do you do to recharge your creative batteries?

Santiago Eucalyptus

5 X 7 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.

This is a quick study of a eucalyptus tree. I wanted to get the feel for the fall colors that are now appearing in the landscape. It was a fun little tree study and a great warm up for some other tree paintings that I’ll post here in the next few weeks.

Water Tower View

10 X 8 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.

Ever since my son started preschool a few weeks ago, my friend Dori Dewberry and I have been out painting. It’s been a blast getting to paint more than once a week! On this particular day we met at a great spot near my house that has amazing views of the city and hills. Unfortunately, when we got there the views were blocked by haze. Nearby was a trail behind some track homes and we both liked the view up the hillside of the water tower so, we set up our gear there. Around 11:30 the haze burned off and the amazing views returned but we were too far along into our paintings to stop.

As soon as our morning haze is gone here in the city of Orange (we’ve had it every day since that morning) we’ll go back and try again. There is a particular view of the city that I can’t stop thinking about painting…..
