Ready to Fly

5 X 7 inch oil painting on canvas panel.
S O L D

This colorful chickadee looks poised for flight. Is he off to gather nesting material or food?

When I paint these small birds I love how the bristles of the brush imitate their feathers. All I have to do is lay down a bold stroke or two and then keep myself from working over it (that’s the hard part). This series has forced me to be really committed to each brush stroke. I’ve notice that if I play around with these too much they become overworked very quickly.

Also, if you haven’t been to Greg LaRock’s blog yet, you should stop over there. He’s an excellent teacher and each of his blog posts has very useful tips for painting.

I love your brush stroke technique to evokes the feathers - no wonder your little bird paintings are flying the coop so quickly!!

I love your birds! I am kinda new to oils. About how long does it take you to complete one of these? Do you do it all in one painting session? Thanks!

I love this one! You are right, the brushstrokes do capture the spirit of feathers. Nicely done!

Kim, I love your bird series. They are so delicate and soft, just like the birds. Beautiful soft hues too.

a beautiful bird! The bold brush strokes are perfect. This gives a sense of power and of potential energy. The colors of this painting are lovely.

EEeee!!! I love this!!! I also love seeing you develop this new style over the last couple of paintings. Those brush strokes are amazing. Are you entering in your Art Assoc.'s juried show this summer? I smell blue ribbon for you if you do!

Another gorgeous bird founds its way to your palette and has flown to its new home just as quickly. This is definitely a good path for you Kim! Thanks for recommending Greg, I admire his work so much and hope to take his workshop someday...

Kim, I love your bird series. I know there are many people out there that love birds and collect paintings etc. anything pertaining to birds. Good luck with this.

Kim, this is SO SWEET...and I mean that in the best way possible. You're right, you've really catured the texture of feathers with your spot-on brush strokes. I really like the faltter patterning of strokes in the background, too; gives it a bit of an asian, design-y feel.

Elsiee - Thanks!

Denise R - It depends on the size I'm working on and the complexity of the bird. Some take an hour and a half some take longer but, I usually finish in one session.

Thanks Dori, LSaeta, Carol, Margaret, Manon, Edward, Nancy, bendystar, Diane, Joan and R Garriott!

Sheila - I will be entering the Orange Open again this year. Although, my best paintings are hanging in the gallery right now. At the same time the OC Fair is going on and I had to find 3 paintings for that too. It's tough finding enough work to hang for several locations but, it's great exposure especially, in this economy.
