South Crescent Bay in Laguna Beach, California is always a great place to study waves in motion. The waves seem to be larger here than at other beaches I've painted at which makes their structure a little easier to see.

This view is looking south toward Laguna's main beach area. I painted it to show my students how simply they could render the bluff in order to get the point across of what it is without painting each and every nook and cranny. There were a few other key lessons here like waves, shadows under waves and palm trees.

While we were there the Marine Mammal Rescue Team dropped by to release 4 seals. They asked that we keep our distance so that we wouldn't scare the animals. It was amazing to see how quickly the seals made a dash for the open ocean once they were released from their cages.
