”SUMMER IN PETER’S CANYON” by Kim VanDerHoek.

8 X 10 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
$65 (Shipping $11 within the U.S., $20 for Canada or $28 for everywhere else)

The eucalyptus tree that overhangs this path is majestic! I’ve painted it over and over and each time it’s beauty provides fresh inspiration. Not to mention a particularly lovely patch of shade that is perfect for painting under in the heat of the summer. It is a perfect muse.

The Red Sweater

”THE RED SWEATER” by Kim VanDerHoek.

With all the holiday activities, I’ve had limited time to paint. Today I thought I’d practice painting more figures. This time it’s four children together. The red sweater on the center girl seemed to fit in with the colors of the season.

A quiet little creek in Irvine captured my attention and I decided to do a couple of paintings here. A man who was passing by stopped to ask what building I was trying to paint. He mistook my rocks for houses. Hummm…..I must need more practice!

Cityscapes and urban views are subjects that have always interested me. Whenever I have the opportunity to paint one I take it. This was painted near Hart Park in downtown Orange. There is a mysterious quality to it that I like.

This was painted entirely on location (en Plein Air) Summer 2007 on archival quality artist’s canvas board using Windsor & Newton oil paints. Painted at the Back Bay in Newport Beach, California.

Ducks, lizards and cranes all live in this beautiful area. It is difficult to choose a subject here because there is beauty at every turn.

Natural Arch

”NATRUAL ARCH” by Kim VanDerHoek.

8 X 10 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
A $13.00 print of this painting is available in my Etsy shop.

I realized today that after winning a second place award from the Orange Art Association for this painting that I never posted a close up of it.

As a painter there are certain paintings that you remember as milestones in your artistic development. This is one of mine. The day I set out to paint this I was questioning the progression of my style. I felt I had done pretty well that day and was rewarded with an immediate sale to the first person that viewed it. What a wonderful boost to my confidence!

People Skills

Today I was practicing my people skills. When you paint in an Impressionist style it’s a challenge to simplify and abstract the figure enough to still read as a figure but also be loose and expressive.

What do you think, are they too loose or just expressive enough?

Winter Wonderland

”WINTER WONDERLAND” by Kim VanDerHoek.

5 X 7 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.

During the Thanksgiving weekend I decorated the house for the holidays, which really got me in the mood to paint something appropriate. Since I live in California, I don’t get many chances to paint snow scenes. Even though this was painted in my studio, I am pleased with how it turned out.

A Second Place Award!

"Natural Arch" by Kim VanDerHoek
8X10 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.

A photographic quality print of this painting is available for sale in my Etsy shop for $13.

This painting received a second place ribbon in the oil painting category during the Orange Art Associations competition! The judge for the evening was the very talented William Wray. His urban landscapes are incredibly evocative and hauntingly beautiful.

Painted near Hart Park in Orange, the archway created by the trees made for an interesting composition. Near the end of this painting the clouds moved in and to add that last bit of drama.

Symphony of Color

”QUARTET” by Kim VanDerHoek.

9 X 12 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
$85 (Shipping $20 within the U.S., $28 for Canada or $35 for everywhere else)

Painted along a walking path in Old Town Orange, I had to pick up my easel and dash under a tree to finish this one because it started to rain on me. Luckily, it wasn’t professional rain! It just sprinkled for a few minutes then stopped.

I use water-based oil paint by Artisan, which has proven problematic on drizzly mornings. The benefits far outweigh the drawbacks with this type of paint however. I love that I don’t have to thin the paint with turpentine or any other flammable solvent.

I painted the original in Summer 2006 and soon after it won first place for best oil painting at the Orange Art Association. The day this was painted there were many boats in the water making lots of waves. The biggest challenge with painting boats is that they are constantly moving. ”PAINTING” by Kim VanDerHoek.

2.5 x 3.5 inch ACEO/ATC original oil painting on canvas paper mounted on acid free cardstock.
$8 (shipping within the U.S. $3)

This ACEO was done using a palette knife (a large metal knife used for mixing paint) instead of a brush. I’ve always admired painters who have mastered this technique so I thought I would give it a try. A fellow painter was kind enough to hold still for a bit while I created this.

”KEYHOLE ROCK” by Kim VanDerHoek.

S O L D

Laguna Beach has many beautiful places to paint. This is a very memorable spot called Keyhole Rock by the Montage resort.

I painted this using a different palette of colors. It was finished in two sessions, one on location and one in the studio. It helps to sketch a scene like this at first to warm up and to get the placement of the essential elements nailed down. The sketch is also a good reference for any studio work that needs to be done.

”JEFFREY BEFORE PHASE 1” by Kim VanDerHoek.

9X12 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
Submitted for competition.

This is my husband’s new favorite painting of mine. When I brought it home he immediately said I should frame it and enter it into any upcoming competitions I could find.

The scene is overlooking Irvine. The street is called Jeffrey and the fields used to be planted with flowers that were then taken to market. Today that field is empty and a construction fence surrounds it. It will be interesting to see what takes its place. I’m hoping for something beautiful that will inspire another painting. What I love in this scene were the telephone poles jutting this way and that, they have such personality!

I hope you enjoy it!

”BLUFF WITH PALMS” by Kim VanDerHoek.

9X12 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
$85 (Shipping $11 within the U.S. or $20 for Canada)

Saturday I went to another art show featuring work done on the peninsula in Newport Beach. It was a paint-out competition put together by the Southern California Plein Air Painters Association.

What happens during a paint out is participating artists can get the backs of their canvases stamped at the start of the event. Then they paint on them in a certain area over the course of a week. In this case it was the Newport peninsula. At the end of the week the work is judged, awards are given out and an art show is put on featuring the work from the paint out.

I saw some amazing artwork created by some amazing local artists!

The painting I’ve posted tonight reminded me of a wonderful day a year ago when I was painting at the beach.

A Must See Show!

This painting is by Tom Brown.

People often ask me how long I’ve been painting. The truth is, not that long. For the last year and a half I’ve been taking classes from an amazing artist named Tom Brown.

When I first saw Tom’s work listed for sale on Ebay I was in awe. Soon after, I purchased one of his paintings and I asked him about his workshops. I’ve been painting with him ever since. His classes are perfect for beginners as well as more advance students. He has simplified the process to make painting a landscape less intimidating. His feedback has always improved my paintings, even when the only thing he tells me I should do is to stop.

Tonight I went to the opening of his gallery show titled “Unexpected Vistas of Irvine” at the Irvine Fine Arts Center. The show was spectacular! Included in the show were cityscapes as well as landscapes, many of which were on a large scale. He said his intent was to demonstrate that the views with man’s touch on them could be just as beautiful as the pristine landscapes. Mission accomplished!

If you are in the area, I highly recommend you stop by to see his work! Admission and parking are free. Irvine Fine Arts Center, 14321 Yale Avenue, Irvine California 92604.

”UP THE PATH” by Kim VanDerHoek.

5X7 inch Oil Painting on canvas board includes gold leaf frame.
$100 (Shipping $25 within the U.S. or $50 for Canada)

Last night this little painting won a first place ribbon for best oil painting at the Orange Art Associations monthly meeting!

The Art Association meets 9 times a year. During each meeting there is a guest speaker, usually an artist, who either gives a lecture or demonstrates how they work. This month Terry Stanley showed all of us how she creates her amazing portraits in watercolor.

Also at each meeting members are allowed to enter 2 pieces of artwork into a group competition. Each creation is put into a category such as oil, watercolor, photography, etc. and judged. The guest speaker for the month has the honor of judging.

I’m not always able to make to every meeting, but when I do go I get so much information from the other artists there! It is such a wonderful organization to be a member of. If you are in Orange County and would like to see for yourself log onto http://www.orangeartassociation.com/index.html

ACEO Play

”TWINS” by Kim VanDerHoek

2.5 x 3.5 inch ACEO/ATC original oil painting on canvas paper mounted on acid free cardstock.
S O L D

It's easy to get lost in the work of painting. Doing what you know will work, sticking with the same methods and colors. These ACEOs let me play around with new things without feeling a great deal of loss in time and materials. Mostly, they give me permission to totally fail. Often, it's the ones that turn out badly that I learn the most from.

Many of them have been successful though and taken my work in a direction I wouldn't normally try. This is one I thought was successful. I hope you enjoy it!

Fine Artist

9X12 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
$85 (Shipping $11 within the U.S. or $20 for Canada)

It seems really weird to me to be able to call myself an artist. In college painting was something I always wanted to do but knew my parents would never let me major in such risky profession. Oh how I envied the students that studied ceramics, glass blowing and painting full-time! For me painting class was just an elective that I needed the credits from in order to graduate. I would leave painting class telling myself over and over that it wasn’t really THAT much fun…I could live a very happy life if I never picked up a paintbrush again. HA!

Near the end of college a writing teacher asked all of us to close our eyes and visualize what exactly we wanted to be doing in five years time. What popped into my head is surprisingly similar to my life today. In the image I was sitting painting at an easel and my husband walked in the door and kissed me hello.

Funny that for so many years I worked as a graphic designer and managed to talk myself out of working in the fine arts field and yet here I am, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Cityscape

”CITY BRIDGE” by Kim VanDerHoek.

8X10 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
S O L D

This bridge is in the heart of the city but you’d never know it by looking at the scene. Right next to the river is a bike path that runs for miles through the city. While painting with a group of fellow artists, a cyclist crashed head first into one of our friend’s easels (she was painting well off of the bike path too)! The cyclist suffered several bumps and bruises. The painter was unhurt although, her easel was broken and her painting was damaged. And can you believe that the cyclist had the nerve to be angry with my friend?

Irvine, California has a wonderful mix of farmland right next to freeways and commercial centers. As a painter, there is an endless feast of inspiration to draw from.

A Personal Favorite

”SPRING IN PETER’S CANYON” by Kim VanDerHoek.

9X12 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
Not For Sale

This is one of my favorite paintings. Everything went right the day I captured this on canvas. Peter’s Canyon is such a wonderful place to paint! Everywhere you turn there is a painting waiting to happen. This is another location that is right on the edge of the city. I am amazed at how many open spaces still remain in Orange County, although, that is rapidly changing.

This painting was juried into the Orange County Fair, the Orange Open Annual Art Show (where I thought it had been sold but that ended up being a typo) and received an Honorable Mention in the Anaheim Art Association’s Annual Art Show. My husband and I are very fond of it so, until I paint something even better we will be hanging onto it.

Today it’s over 100 degrees and I really wish I lived in Laguna Beach! But then, any day is a good day to live in Laguna Beach regardless of the temperature. This painting is a view from Heisler Park looking north. I love painting palm trees, they look so complex but when you break them down into shapes they almost paint themselves.

Honestly, I can feel the tropical breeze coming off the water! Hear the waves crashing?

This was one of those paintings that just sort of fell out of me. Near completion I stood back and thought wow, did I just do that? I hope you enjoy it!

This is a new experiment. If I have some extra time when I go out painting I have been creating these ACEOs. Most of the ACEOs I’ve seen are very detailed, but my overall style is much looser. I love how abstract these little paintings are. A few brush strokes of the right color is all it takes.

ACEO stands for Art Card Editions and Originals. They are cards of artwork measuring 2.5 x 3.5 inches, the same as a standard playing card. These cards are very collectable since they don’t take up much space.

Saturday morning is more relaxed in front of Starbucks than most other days of the week. Still, I am amazed at how many people are up and out the door at 8:00 a.m.! How on earth do they do it?

A New Palette

”FIRST CLIFF” by Kim VanDerHoek.

S O L D

I’ve been experimenting with unusual colors lately as a way to spice things up. It’s easy to fall into the trap of painting what is familiar using the same successful methods. After painting this cliff in Laguna Beach, California several times before, it was time for a new approach and this was my first attempt. My second painting of this cliff went very quickly since all the paint was already mixed (I’ll post that one soon.)

Many people passing by stopped to see what I was doing. Some even whispered to each other, “What is she thinking?” One young boy said loudly, “Is that supposed to be the beach? I don’t see that anywhere around here!” His mother hushed him and quickly led him away. I laughed and secretly applauded him for his honesty. You always know where you stand with kids!

Second Place Award!

"Orange Cliffs of Del Mar" by Kim VanDerHoek

5X7 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
A photographic quality print of this painting is available for sale in my Etsy shop for $13.

Two of my paintings received ribbons in the Anaheim Art Association's Annual Art Exhibit. This one received second place in the oil painting category and the other got an honorable mention! If you look at my previous posts, you'll notice that this painting also got an honorable mention in the Orange Art Association Show.

I am absolutely floored! This is the first year I’ve ever entered any competitions and am thrilled to be getting noticed. It’s always so difficult choosing what I feel is my best work to put into a competition but I am starting to realize that the saying, “go with your instinct” rings true in this case.

There are hundreds of talented artists who enter these shows every year. It’s an honor to have my work hanging next to theirs!

Another Show

”ESCARPMENT AT DAWN” by Kim VanDerHoek.

8X10 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
A photographic quality print of this painting is available for sale in my Etsy shop for $13.

This is one of three paintings I entered into the Anaheim Art Associations Annual Art show today. I also entered "Orange Cliffs of Del Mar" which you can see here in my blog. It got an honorable mention in the Orange Art Assoc. Show. The volunteers taking in the artwork were very complimentary. I am hoping to get at least one painting juried into the show. It's very nerve wracking trying to pick three paintings you feel have a chance of making it in. You never know what the judge is looking for. What if he or she doesn't like Impressionism?

A lot of artists I've talked to are afraid of putting their work in front of people and opening themselves up to criticism. It is difficult working to the best of your ability, putting you heart into a painting and then having a stranger walk by and say, "That's awful! What was she thinking?" (Yes, that has happened to me - about a month ago in fact.)

But, you have to. When someone walks by and says, "WOW!" That far outweighs the scorn.

I painted this in a very public spot near the beach. Probably 100 people walked by me, some were kind, some were bewildered. The painting seemed to paint itself that day and I was happy with the result. Ultimately, that's what matters.

Painting Architecture

”VINTAGE SQUARE HOUSE NO. 1” by Kim VanDerHoek.

8X10 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
$65 (shipping within the U.S. $11 - Canada $20)

I've been painting more architecture lately and this painting kicked off a newfound interest. When I saw this little house, I was intimidated but reminded myself to go slowly. The key with any complicated subject is to break it down into parts and not worry about the whole thing until much later in the process. The hard part is not overworking everything and knowing when to stop.

This was painted on location (en Plein Air) Summer 2007 on archival quality artist’s canvas board using Windsor & Newton oil paints. I’ve been debating about whether or not to enter this painting in some upcoming competitions. It’s one of my favorites. While in the middle of painting this several groups of WWII aircraft flew overhead – it was really spectacular! This little house has loads of charm. Imagine sitting under the olive tree with a glass of wine….. I hope you enjoy it!

My First ACEO

”TWO HOUR PARKING” by Kim VanDerHoek

2.5 x 3.5 inch original oil painting on canvas paper mounted on acid free cardstock.
S O L D

This is a new experiment. Every time I go out painting I plan on creating an ACEO. Small paintings seem to really work for me. They force me to keep my detail and brush work simple.

ACEO stands for Art Card Editions and Originals. They are cards of artwork measuring 2.5 x 3.5 inches, the same as a standard playing card. These cards are very collectable since they don’t take up much space.

This scene shows how busy downtown Orange is on a Saturday morning. Not one parking space is empty. All around me I could hear the hustle and bustle of the city. It was a very exciting place to paint!
