Three Sisters

”THREE SISTERS” by Kim VanDerHoek.

5 X 7 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
S O L D

This is the last painting from my High Sierra backpacking trip.

Working in late afternoon light is challenging for me because I rarely get to paint at that time of day and am not used to the rapidly changing light conditions. Painting during fading light requires speed and a good plan. I thought it best I use my palette knife again because it would help me keep pace with the light.

This is my husband’s favorite painting from our trip. I hope you’ve enjoyed this series.

Convict Canyon View

”CONVICT CANYON VIEW” by Kim VanDerHoek.

8 X 10 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
$240 (Shipping $12 within the U.S., $20 for Canada or $28 for everywhere else)

This is another painting from my High Sierra backpacking trip.

At the bottom of this canyon is the trail up to our campsite in the mountains. It’s all up hill and takes a lot of time and sweat getting there, but the view is worth it!

Recent Awards

Two of my paintings won awards at the Anaheim Art Associations Annual Juried Art Exhibit. “Holcomb Valley Ranch” (the one on the left) won 3rd place in the oil painting category. “Laguna Crush” won the Auxilia d’ Arts award.

There were 136 entries. Ernie Marjoram was the judge. He was kind enough to stop by during the show and talk about his selections. It was interesting to hear his decision making process. After the awards ceremony I had the opportunity to get his feedback on my work. He offered lots of encouragement and a few tips on areas I could improve.

It was an exciting afternoon and I felt honored to have my work hanging in the show.

Lake Mildred Inlet

”LAKE MILDRED INLET” by Kim VanDerHoek.

6 X 8 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
$275 (Shipping $12 within the U.S., $20 for Canada or $28 for everywhere else)

This one’s also from my High Sierra backpacking trip.

My husband caught 4 trout out of this little stream. It winds through a beautiful meadow and into Lake Mildred.

This was painted with my palette knife because of the short amount of time I had to complete it.

Afternoon at Bright Dot

”AFTERNOON AT BRIGHT DOT” by Kim VanDerHoek.

6 X 8 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
$275 (Shipping $12 within the U.S., $20 for Canada or $28 for everywhere else)

Here’s another painting from the High Sierra backpacking trip.

After carrying over 42 pounds up the trail for 5 hours and setting up our camp we decided that the next day we should hike up to Bright Dot Lake. It’s a small lake and it takes about 3 hours to get there with a light pack.

My husband fished while I painted. Because I was very tired and our time there was limited, I decided to do a quicker palette knife painting. The paint is much thicker when I use a knife. It forces me to edit a lot of what I am seeing to just the essential elements.

View of Red Slate Mountain

”VIEW OF RED SLATE MOUNTAIN” by Kim VanDerHoek.

8 X 10 inch Oil Painting on canvas board.
$240 (Shipping $12 within the U.S., $20 for Canada or $28 for everywhere else)

Here’s another mountain scene from my backpacking trip. The lake is called lake Mildred. Two years ago I painted this same scene. I wanted to revisit it again to see how much my style and skill have changed since then. Like most artists, I’m never totally satisfied and am always striving to improve.
