Mission Courtyard

6 X 6 inch oil painting on canvas panel.
$150.00 (Sold unframed. Free shipping within the U.S.)

This hidden courtyard behind the Mission in San Juan Capistrano is one of my favorite views, especially when the bougainvillea is blooming. Just beyond the arch is a fountain and the mission bells are overhead. Often when the rest of the mission is crowded, this courtyard is a quiet and overlooked place.

My daughter turned 18 months recently. She’s had so many milestones and this last year and a half has flow by. Now she is talking and getting into everything. An unfortunate side effect is that my painting time has been cut back. I am trying to work out more childcare with friends in exchange for art or painting lessons. If any of my blog friends have helpful suggestions - I’m all ears (or eyes since I’ll be reading your comments).

6" Squared Opening Reception Spring 2011

A few photos from the opening reception for the 6" Squared Art Show in Costa Mesa, California.

That night I got to meet several artists face to face that I've only known through blogging. Also, I got to see so many amazing paintings in person which were created by fellow bloggers (what a talented group).

The evening was filled with lots of friends and an outstanding collection of art.

American Artist Cover Competition Finalist

It's a huge honor to have been selected for the American Artist Magazine Cover Competition along with so many other beautiful works of art! While I didn't win the cover competition, I did get a nice write-up in the magazine. My painting "Locally Grown" was the only landscape chosen (how cool is that?!).

This has been a very popular painting, I hope you aren't tired of seeing it again and again.

Also, I will be teaching oil painting classes on Thursday from 9:30 - 12:30 in Costa Mesa, CA every week. Please contact me if you would like more details.

Overlooking The Canyon

8 X 10 inch oil painting on panel.

Recently, my husband and I took the kids with us on a short hike. I packed my paints and he packed a bag with snacks and diapers. While I painted on the top of a hill he hiked the kids all around the area.

The challenge at this location was finding a scene that would make a good painting. While there were beautiful views and pretty groups of trees in the area, I wasn’t seeing a lot of potential paintings. After reaching the top of a hill I saw this view and decided it was the best place that I’d seen to stop and set up my easel.

My painting spot was just off a busy trail. Lots of mountain bikers and families were on the going past. While finishing up this painting my family came back and played nearby. While there, my husband was shocked at how many people stopped to talk to me and look at my painting. Over the years of painting plein air I’ve gotten used to it and the interruptions don’t bother me (my kids have certainly helped train me), in fact, I enjoy talking to people who want to see what I’m doing. Often I meet other artists, young kids usually want to see and there is always that guy that stops right in front of me, poses and asks to be painted. To date, no one has accepted my challenge to stand there for an hour while I add his or her likeness to the canvas.

Meeting new people is another aspect to painting en plein air that I enjoy.
